Displaced Left Intersection Public Education Campaign
HNTB / INDOT

The Challenge

Introduce a radical, unfamiliar, and potentially confusing new operational design, a displaced left-turn intersection, to a highly skeptical public prior to launch, mitigating community anxiety and ensuring day-one driver safety.

The Strategy

  • Phase 1 (Pre-Launch Education): Developed high-clarity visual modeling and instructional scripts to visually guide drivers through the new traffic pattern before it became operational, lowering the barrier to public comprehension.

  • Phase 2 (Post-Launch Validation): Produced a "Success of the Displaced Left" follow-up campaign capturing real-world traffic flows, data-backed safety metrics, and positive community feedback to validate the engineering team's strategy.

  • Reputation Management: Positioned complex engineering concepts as accessible, common-sense solutions through clear, empathetic messaging targeted directly at local commuters.

The Impact

  • Behavioral Modification: Measurably smoothed the public transition to a complex traffic infrastructure shift, minimizing day-one confusion and protecting the organization's public reputation.

  • Operational Problem-Solving: Established a scalable multimedia framework proving how visual media can be deployed to solve real-world, high-stakes operational and educational hurdles.
